Canada's newest territory is Nunavut, which was created on April 1, 1999. Previous to its creation Canada's north consisted of theYukon and the Northwest Territories. The capital city of Nunavut is Iqaluit, which is located on Baffin Island. Except for a few islands, Nunavut is located north of the 60th parallel.
The Northwest Territories is located in Canada's north and is situated between the Yukon Territories and Nunavut. It is 3,560 kilometres from the 60th parallel, the border of British Columbia, Alberta & Sakatchewan to the North Pole and 4,256 kilometres from east (Nunavut) to west (Yukon).
